Portland Vegan Eats: Harlow on Hawthorne

Portland Vegan Eats: Harlow on Hawthorne

The atmosphere at Harlow on a Tuesday afternoon when I stepped in for lunch was bright & busy. I ordered from the counter & got situated at a table with my son who was sleeping in his stroller & saved a space for a dear old friend who would be joining me.

I sipped on a cold jar of Upright Brewing #7 lager until my food came. I dug in first on the Jalapeño cornbread with honey whipped butter (above) & then had a taste of the smoked tempeh which I had ordered a side of. My main entrée was the ‘Urban Bowl’ of which I had also tried at Harlow’s sister restaurant Prasad the day before. If I lived in Portland I could easily see eating here regularly!

The ‘Urban Bowl’: mixed greens, steamed greens, olive oil, kimchi, sea veggies, avocado, carrots, scallions & za’atar with a lemon ginger dressing & avocado cilantro dressing.

A side of smoked tempeh – this was so delicious I ate it up, savoring every single bite & then ordering another one for my friend to try when she arrived. The people sitting next to me were eyeing the tempeh & also decided to try a side after my glowing, stuffed mouth review.

Having gotten a bit chummy with the ladies dining next to me (Harlow is a seat-yourself place & some of the tables are long, fitting a couple different parties), I politely asked if I could photograph their vibrant beauty of a dish when it arrived- Harlow’s ‘House Salad’ (above) with house greens, beets, carrots, red cabbage, hemp seeds & choice of sauce.
