Volcano House Visit: Celebrating the National Park Service’s 98th birthday

August 26, 2014 was the National Park Service’s 98th birthday & I decided to celebrate it by going to the National Park closest to me at the time, which also happens to be one of my favorite National Parks.

I was staying on the Big Island during the last week of August & already intended to take time for a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  I learned of NPS’s 98th birthday via social media the Sunday night prior & that set the date for my mini road trip with my son.

We mostly spent our time enjoying the views from the Volcano House & relaxing in the common areas of the lodge, chatting with people from around the world who had traveled far in order to enjoy the natural majesty & incredible landscapes of this area.

I have been to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on numerous occasions over the years~ to hike the rocky coast to the lava flow viewing areas (back in the late 90′s when this was the way & route to view), to take the cool walk through the Thurston Lava Tubes, to hike the Halema`uma`u Crater trail & more.

The nature of the park being on volcanic territory means that access to trails & hikes change over time as volcanic activity changes.  Hikes I have been on in the past are simply not possible right now or altogether obsolete while new ones have opened up. Some things change & some things stay the same. It is always interesting to visit the park & see as well as continue to learn of the region & the histories of the NPS.

Here’s to the National Park Service & the beautiful, diverse lands!

But on this day, with my 9 month old son, I was happy to take it slow & easy, to enjoy the lodge & the viewing lounge. My son Hunter appeared to have an absolute blast in there as well….
